Selfridges’ Centenary

18th May

As part of Selfridges’ birthday celebrations we get a bunch of cool brands in the department stores colours. I’m not sure why anyone would particularly want a yellow candle, phone, shoe etc. but it is admirable that Selfridges are effectively celebrating the present rather than evoking yesteryear. The smarter solutions use black as an active ingredient (for example Johnnie Walker and Jimmy Choo) rather than just “doing a yellow one”.

Harry Gordon Selfridge of course pioneered the idea of retail as entertainment, and his approach is fundamentally as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago: “People will sit up and take notice of you if you will sit up and take notice of what makes them sit up and take notice.”
