Jonathan Ive and the art of the soft sell

It’s my experience that in design true talent is in inverse relationship to displays of ego. The humblest creative I ever briefed was Sir Peter Blake, who’s openness to suggestion was a little unsettling given that he was, after all, the maestro. Similarly this interview from the Wired blog with Apple design chief Jonathan Ive has no whiff of “the sell” about it. Rather he is straightforwardly excited about the work, the challenge and the elegance of the solution. Selling is a big part of agency life – the bolder the idea, the more challenging it is to inspire a client to take a chance. But watching this little film it struck me that the most compelling and believable explanations of design also tend to be the most workmanlike. Perhaps the days of TM’ing every thought process might be taking us away from simply letting the talent speak for itself?
