Shine a light: the new Doctor Who identity

20th October

Down the years, Doctor Who’s titles have had more graphic incarnations than the program has had regenerated Doctors. Given the passionate nature of the series fanbase, if I’d designed the new Doctor Who logo (top), I’d be slightly nervous of the on-line reaction. As a non-fan however, I think the new mark is a big improvement – the old one looked like a London taxi light to me – the revised glow is more evocative of the police light on the Tardis. But while the DW / Tardis monogram is quite neat, it strikes me this element is one for the licensing guys, not the fans. Of course, we all probably have affection for the device as it was in our own childhoods – the one below is from mine, but nostalgia aside, it has not really stood the test of time. While the new one is doubtless being ripped apart in cyberspace with a ruthlessness that would put the Cybermen to shame, it will, in time, be happily recalled by a new generation of viewers who currently watch the show from behind the sofa.
