When design goes rogue

14th April

To paraphrase Apocalypse Now “If you take a swig of this, you’ll never have to prove your courage in any other way…”

The U.S.A. is arguably the cradle of great branding and packaging design, but it’s weird how often examples come up of American work so crass they boggle the brain. Do you think a semiotician was involved in guiding these beauties to shelf? These designs have, however, come in for criticism from military personnel who feel patronised and offended by the packs, so we can’t see them as a fair reflection of the great American consumer. Perhaps they are indicative instead of a more brazenly entrepreneurial culture stateside?
